A limited set of core quality management terms and definitions now sit directly inside Clause 3, instead of relying entirely on a separate reference to ISO 9000. ISO 9000 remains the normative source for the full vocabulary.
For the first time, quality culture and ethical behaviour are explicitly addressed — tied to how leadership sets tone, how staff awareness is built, and the environment in which processes operate day to day.
2015 treated risks and opportunities as one combined exercise. 2026 separates them clearly, requiring the organisation to plan distinct actions to address risks and distinct actions to pursue opportunities.
Requirements around planning and managing changes to the QMS have been reinforced, so changes are more reliably steered towards preserving the system's intended results.
Annex A has been substantially rewritten to clarify structure, terminology and intent — including precise definitions of words like "appropriate," "applicable," "consider," "ensure," and "continual." It adds no new requirements.
The old Annex B, which simply listed other ISO/TC 176 standards, has been removed. That reference material now lives inside Annex A and on the ISO/TC 176 website.
