What Caused the Changes to OHSAS 18001?

What Are the Main Differences between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001?

There are a host of major differences between OHSAS 18001 and its successor, ISO 45001, which depicts dramatic shift in the way health and safety management is dealt with in the workplace.
Among the main differences are:

  • the incorporation of management taking a stronger leadership role in health and safety;
  • workers will be required to undergo training, and are empowered to identify risks and generate ways to alleviate them; and
  • unlike OHSAS 18001, which emphasized only hazard control, ISO 45001 establishes and follows a preventative process in which hazard risks are evaluated and taken care of before causing injuries or accidents.

Are there Similarities between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001?

The two policies do have their share of similarities. Among them are the intent to establish a framework for preventing injuries on the job; the following of the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) method; and a host of requirements that have been consolidated and expanded upon in ISO 45001.
